A bag pattern is a set of cut shapes plus construction information. It converts finished dimensions into panels that can be cut, prepared and assembled.
Finished dimensions and pattern dimensions
The finished width, height and depth are not copied directly onto every pattern piece. Seam allowance, folds, binding, piping and material thickness must be considered. This is why changing one finished dimension can require revisions to several pieces.
Gussets create depth
A gusset may be a separate side panel, a bottom panel, one continuous strip or a fold formed in the main body. Its depth influences volume and silhouette. The junction between side and bottom gussets also affects corner shape and sewing difficulty.
Pocket construction
A patch pocket is added to a panel. An inset or welt-style pocket is built into an opening. Bellows or pleated pockets expand. Mesh pockets need edge finishing and stretch direction to be considered. State the intended contents so dimensions and opening access can be evaluated.
Curves, corners and bulk
Tight curves and multi-layer corners are harder to feed through a sewing machine than broad curves and flat seams. Foam, binding and reinforcement can create bulk at the same point. Pattern and sequence may need adjustment to keep the finished shape controlled.
Pattern approval information
The buyer does not always need every production pattern file, but the approved specification should control finished dimensions, visible construction, pocket placement and revision status. Annotated sample photos help connect the drawing to the physical result.
