
Stitching should be specified as part of a seam system, not as a decorative line alone. Material thickness, coating, thread, needle size, stitch density and load direction all influence the result.
Lockstitch
Single-needle lockstitch is widely used for joining panels and topstitching. It creates a controlled line on both sides of the work. The operator still needs to manage seam allowance, feed and material layers to avoid puckering or shifting.
Double-needle stitching
Two parallel rows can create a consistent appearance and distribute sewing across a wider area. Double-needle construction may be used on selected seams or topstitched areas, but accessibility and panel shape affect where the machine can operate.
Bartack and box-X reinforcement
A bartack is a dense, short reinforcement. A box-X pattern spreads stitching across a webbing attachment area. Neither should be treated as an automatic strength guarantee: the underlying fabric and reinforcement layer must support the load.
Bound and turned seams
A bound seam covers a raw internal edge with binding tape. A turned seam hides the raw edge inside the construction. Selection affects appearance, bulk, labour and how easily the seam can be inspected.
Stitch length and needle holes
Very short stitches create more needle penetrations. On coated or tightly woven fabric, that may affect appearance or local integrity. Longer stitches may suit thicker assemblies but must still hold the seam correctly. A representative material stack should be tested before approval.
What to put in a specification
Identify critical seams, seam allowance, visible topstitching, reinforcement patterns, thread colour and acceptable appearance. Annotate strap and handle load points rather than stating only “reinforced stitching.”
