Contents and capacity
List the main objects with dimensions and approximate loaded weight. A bag sized only by litre capacity may still have an opening that is too small or an interior shape that wastes space. Identify items that need separate protection or fixed orientation.
Access
Decide whether the user needs a top opening, clamshell opening, front access or several compartments. Frequent-use tools may need one-hand access; travel contents may benefit from a wide opening and dividers.
Carrying system
Consider carrying duration, expected load and movement. Handles, shoulder straps, backpack straps and waist support create different load paths. Strap width, padding, adjustability and attachment reinforcement should be part of the same discussion.
Protection and structure
Foam, board, lining, dividers and reinforced bases can protect contents and shape the bag. More structure also adds material, sewing bulk and weight. Specify where protection is needed instead of padding every panel without a reason.

Explain exposure to abrasion, dust, light rain, spills, cold items or frequent cleaning. These details guide material and seam decisions. Claims such as waterproof or medical suitability should not be assumed from appearance alone.
