Bag Anatomy and Terminology: A Practical Glossary

Clear terminology reduces ambiguity between a buyer, designer and factory. A phrase such as “make the side wider” can mean changing the gusset, the front panel or the opening. Naming the component makes the revision easier to record.

Main body panels

The front panel and back panel form the main faces of a bag. A side gusset adds depth, while a bottom gusset forms the base. Some bags use one continuous gusset around three sides; others use separate side and bottom pieces. A base reinforcement may be inserted between the exterior and lining when the bag needs more shape.

Openings and closures

A zipper opening may be straight, curved or U-shaped. The zipper includes teeth or coil, slider, puller and end stops. Other closures include hook-and-loop tape, snaps, buckles, drawcords and magnetic components. The specification should identify the opening length, direction and whether a protective flap is required.

Carrying components

Common terms include webbing handle, shoulder strap, adjuster, strap pad, D-ring, swivel hook and reinforcement patch. Strap attachment points are load paths, so their location and stitch pattern matter as much as the strap material.

Pockets and organization

An inset pocket sits inside a panel seam. A patch pocket is sewn onto a panel. A zip pocket, mesh pocket, bottle pocket, divider and organizer panel each need dimensions and intended contents. State whether a pocket must lie flat, expand or protect an item.

Edge and interior terms

The lining is the interior layer. Interlining, foam or board may sit between lining and shell. Piping defines an outer edge; binding covers a seam edge; seam allowance is the material between the stitch line and cut edge.
